How to Create Content with Your 9-5 Job

So, you have a full-time job but also dream of becoming a content creator? I get it. Juggling a 9-5 job while trying to build yourself up as a content creator can feel overwhelming. You clock out from work, and instead of relaxing, you’re thinking about creating videos, writing blog posts, or growing your social media.

What can you do to make it work? Let’s break it down step by step.

Step 1

The first thing you need to do is get clear on why you want to create content in the first place. Are you trying to build a personal brand? Do you want to monetize your skills? Or is content creation just something you’re passionate about?

Having a clear reason will help you understand what type of content to focus on and keep you motivated when things get hectic. If you don’t have a strong “why,” it’s easy to loose focus and wonder 'why am I doing this?'.

Take some time to write down your goals. Identify whether you want to grow your Instagram audience, start a YouTube channel, or become a thought leader on LinkedIn.

Step 2

Once you have clarity, the next step is to figure out what type of content fits your schedule. Not all content formats require the same level of effort. If you’re someone who enjoys writing and can spare 20 minutes during your lunch break, blogging or writing LinkedIn posts might be a great fit.

If you prefer talking, then short-form videos on TikTok or Instagram Reels can be an easier way to share ideas. Simply pick a format that doesn’t feel like extra work on top of your job.

One of the best ways to stay consistent is to batch-create content on weekends. Instead of trying to squeeze in content creation every single day, set aside a few hours on Saturday or Sunday to create multiple pieces of content in one go. If you’re making videos, film several at once.

If you’re writing blog posts, draft a few and schedule them for later. This method not only saves time but also helps you stay ahead of schedule so you’re never scrambling for content. Using tools like Notion, Trello, or Google Docs to plan out your ideas in advance will make this process much easier. That way, you’re not starting from scratch every time you sit down to create.

Even though your weekdays are busy, there are still small pockets of time you can use to be productive. Your lunch break, commute, or even the time you spend waiting in line can be put to good use.

Step 3

Another major time-saver is automating and scheduling your content in advance. You don’t need to manually post every single day. There are plenty of scheduling tools that allow you to plan your content for the week so that you can focus on your job without worrying about staying active online. Meta Business Suite is great for scheduling Instagram and Facebook posts, Buffer and TweetDeck work well for Twitter, and LinkedIn has its own native scheduler.

If you have a blog like Substack and Medium, these platforms allow you to schedule posts ahead of time. The more you automate, the easier it becomes to balance content creation with your 9-5.

A smart way to maximize your efforts is to repurpose content across multiple platforms. If you write a blog post, turn key points into a LinkedIn thread or an Instagram carousel. If you film a long-form YouTube video, cut out snippets for TikTok or Instagram Reels. If you record a podcast, use quotes from the episode to create engaging social media posts. Repurposing allows you to reach different audiences without constantly having to come up with new ideas from scratch.

It’s important to set realistic expectations for yourself. Your full-time job pays the bills, so don’t pressure yourself to produce daily content if it’s unsustainable. Start small and build momentum.

Maybe you begin with just one post per week and gradually increase your output as you get more comfortable. Quality is always better than quantity, so don’t rush to churn out content just for the sake of posting. And if you ever feel overwhelmed, take a step back and give yourself permission to pause. Burnout will only slow you down in the long run.

Step 4

If your content aligns with your industry, consider incorporating your work experiences into your posts. Share lessons you’ve learned on the job, industry insights, or even behind-the-scenes moments. Just be mindful of company policies and confidentiality. This approach not only helps you create content more easily but also positions you as an expert in your field.

Engaging with your audience doesn’t have to take hours. Even just a few minutes a day can make a big impact. Replying to comments, answering DMs, and engaging with fellow creators can help you build a strong community.

You don’t need to carve out a specific time for this, do it in micro-moments throughout your day. While waiting for your coffee, scrolling through social media during breaks, or commuting home, take a few minutes to interact with your audience. Engagement is still key to building a loyal following, and the more you interact, the more people will engage with your content in return.

Step 5

Once you’ve built consistency, you might start thinking about monetization. There are several ways to turn your content into income, depending on your niche and audience.

Affiliate marketing is one of the easiest ways to start, where you recommend products and earn a commission on sales. Sponsored content is another route, where brands pay you to promote their products.

You can also create digital products like ebooks, courses, or templates. If you have a skill that others need, freelancing can be another way to make money through your content.

Monetization should feel like a natural extension of what you’re already creating, so take your time to explore what works best for you.

Balancing a 9-5 job with content creation isn’t easy, but it is possible with the right approach. Start small, stay consistent, and be patient with yourself.
